Trade-Offs
What are we willing to sacrifice our happiness for? Is it more important for us to be right or happy? Is it better to feel angry or calm? Whenever we choose anger, hostility, or self-righteousness, we sentence ourselves to misery and pain.
But whatever happens outside us, we can respond with serenity. It may not be our first, automatic response, but we can gently guide ourselves back to it. We can remind ourselves that we have traded our ego's wish to be right for peace and happiness.
Harmonious relations with others make us happier. We do not always have to agree with them, and we never have to allow them to harm us. But we can accept the things we can't change, calmly do whatever we need to for our well being, and maintain our peace and happiness.
"Nothing is worth trading away my inner peace and happiness."
