The Water Closet
The following is a short note to tell you of an English lady from London who visited Switzerland, looking for a room for a future holiday. A local schoolmaster took her to several places and she finally settled on one and returned to England. Upon her return she suddenly remembered she had not seen a water closet (bathroom) around the place. So, she immediately wrote to the schoolmaster asking if there was a "W.C." around. The schoolmaster not being well versed in English, asked a local Parish Priest meaning of the letters "W.C." The only solution they could arrive at was a "Wayside Chapel". The schoolmaster wrote the following note to the English lady who wanted a "W.C." in connection with her room.
Dear Madam,
I take great pleasure in informing you that a "W.C." is situated just 9 miles from your room in a beautiful grove of pine trees. The "W.C." is capable of holding 229 people, and is open on Thursday's and Sunday's. Since many people are expected during the summer months, I suggest you always go early to get a good seat and avoid standing in line, which is an unfortunate situation if you are in the habit of going regularly. Many people bring their lunch and make a day of it. On Thursday there is organ accompaniment. As the acoustics of the "W.C". are excellent, every sound can be heard by all. The newest attraction is a bell donated by a wealthy resident, and it rings every time a person enters. My wife, who is rather delicate, cannot go regularly. It's been almost a year since she went last, and naturally this pains her very much, not being able to go more often. A bazaar is being held to provide plush seats for all, since the people believe that this is a long-felt need. I shall be delighted to reserve the best seat for you. If you wish to be seated where you can be seen by all, I can arrange that also. Hoping to be of service to you.
I remain,
The Schoolmaster
